Sustainable Cooling in Cities Seminar Series No. 7

September 2, 2026, 10:00 - 11:00 PM GMT+2
Webinar/Virtual Meeting

Abstract

This research focuses on the interaction between urban heat islands, building electrification, heat rejection from cooling systems, and the transition from individual air-source systems toward district and fifth-generation cooling networks. He will also discuss how urban morphology and density constraints influence the feasibility and performance of sustainable cooling strategies based on Brussels European Quarter developments.

Bio

Shady Attia is Professor of Sustainable Architecture and Building Technology at the University of Liège, Belgium, and Head of the Sustainable Building Design (SBD) Lab. His research focuses on sustainable cooling, urban heat islands, net-zero carbon buildings, and district energy systems. He is internationally recognized for linking building performance, urban microclimate, and climate adaptation in dense urban environments.
